IKUS Life Enrichment Services and Indian Trails Camp is looking for enthusiastic Camp Counselors for the Summer 2022 season!

IKUS Life Enrichment Services / Indian Trails Camp
IKUS / Indian Trails Camp is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing individuals with disabilities an enriched life experience through meaningful relationships, recreation, and advocacy. We are home to over 30 acres of beautiful forest offering endless opportunities for outdoor recreational activities. Our remarkable campus brings adaptive recreation to the lives of each individual, combining a barrier-free camp setting with state-of-the-art facilities. It is a place filled with fun, recreation, friendship, and acceptance teaching our campers perseverance, teamwork and self-reliance. Indian Trails Camp welcomes campers with a wide range of physical, cognitive, and/or developmental disabilities aged 5 and beyond. Inclusion and mainstreaming play key roles in making campers feel a part of every experience.

Job Purpose
The purpose of a Camp Counselor is to create and establish a “cabin unit” and help campers create a summer that will last a lifetime! Counselors are responsible for hands-on physical care of campers and for establishing relationships with our campers.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Provide leadership and guidance to all campers through a variety of games, crafts, sports, hiking and camping activities in group, cabin and all camp activities.
  • Assist campers in daily activity areas: meal times, swimming, boating, arts, ropes and all other camp activities while being aware of physical and emotional limitations of campers.
  • Assist in program planning based on pre-arranged educational/recreational themes while adapting activities, as needed, to allow active participation by all of your campers.
  • Integrate campers into the group while increasing independence, experiencing community membership, increasing social skills, building peer relationships and increasing self confidence
  • Be a role model to help your camper have a positive experience with the activities and friendships while providing emotional support and encouragement.
  • Maintain constant supervision of campers, provide physical assistance to campers when necessary, assist campers in emergency (fire, injury, etc.)
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Care for all physical needs of campers needed assistance. This may include dressing, feeding, toileting, showering etc.
  • Follow all camp policies and procedures in accordance with state licensing as directed by the Camp Director
  • Work closely with Heath Office Staff to ensure familiarity with the special needs, medical conditions, dietary concerns, safety requirements and/or behavioral problems of the campers.
  • Assisting in incoming and outgoing camp activities including check in and cleaning of the cabin and other camp areas.
  • Responsible for keeping the cabin and camp areas clean. Keep all camp supplies and equipment in good shape and organized.
  • Responsible for any other duties as assigned by Camp Director or Lead Counselors.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High School graduate or equivalent, or at least 18 years of age
  • Desire to work with individuals both youth and adults with physical, cognitive, and/or developmental disabilities. Experience in working with people with disabilities is ideal, but not required
  • Ability to assist in teaching and assisting campers with activity participation
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, compassion, self-control and teamwork
  • Maturity, sensitivity and confidentiality are required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, flexibility and problem solving skills

Position Information:

Job Type: Full time, seasonal, salary position.

Employment Dates:

  • May 31st – June 3 - Summer Staff Training
  • June 5 – August 12 – Summer Camp

Schedule: Live on campus from Sunday to Friday. Friday evening and Saturday evening are free, returning to camp by Sunday morning.

Pay: $325 per week.

Included:    

  • Living quarters – in cabin with campers
  • All meals during summer camp sessions
  • Free parking

Requirements

Position Requirements

  • High school diploma / G.E.D.
  • All staff members must be able to complete orientation and training, and complete a background check prior to the start of camp
  • Live on campus during summer camp sessions.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations at camp. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • The work involves direct involvement with day camp participants which typically requires bending, crouching, stooping, standing for long periods of time, considerable walking and may require intermittent lifting of objects of a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • The work is performed indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather for long periods of time.
  • No use of alcohol or drugs while working or while at camp.
  • Maintain high energy levels and enthusiasm for prolonged periods throughout the day.
  • Must have the auditory, visual and physical ability to respond to critical incidents
